Contracted by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), cbec conducted a series of detailed assessments of a weir’s structure on the Bronie Burn near Ellon, Aberdeenshire, to improve fish passage

A detailed desk-based study was followed by a field-based fluvial audit and ecological and topographic surveys. The results of these assessments were used to develop a suite of options for enabling fish passage. Following close liaison with the client and a stakeholder workshop, two preferred options were selected, including detailed costings, buildability and constraints assessments and recommended enhancements.

Following agreement of the final preferred option, the weir removal and watercourse realignment were successfully completed by McGowan Environmental Engineering during the summer of 2022. cbec’s design delivered so much more than improvements to fish passage, with significant enhancements to channel and habitat diversity also evident at the site weeks after construction.
