cbec was contracted to develop restoration measures for the wetland around Ellie Burn, Aberdeenshire, with the ultimate aim of assisting in the improvement of the current ‘moderate’ ecological status (as per EU Water Framework Directive classification) of the larger Burn of Savoch waterbody (the main flow input to the Loch of Stathbeg nature reserve)
Phase 1 of the project produced a hierarchy of restoration options, from which a preferred suite of measures for improving the condition of the channel, wetland and associated riparian area was selected and indicative designs were produced. Phase 2 included developing and delivering the final restoration designs. Specific project components included topographic surveying of the site, 2D hydrodynamic modelling, ground investigations and botanical surveys. We liaised with the project steering group and other local stakeholders to encourage buy-in to the project and to address existing concerns. Construction was completed in March 2014.
