Over time, the River Don at Luib Bridge, Aberdeenshire, had migrated. The channel began to approach the bridge obliquely and flowed through the flood arch even under normal flow conditions.

This caused sedimentation and instability around the bridge. Our design took a nature-based approach to river management. We straightened the channel’s approach to the bridge and used large wood training log structures to discourage future channel migration. These structures train normal flows through the main arch without using hard engineering measures, as such measures were likely to cause erosion elsewhere.

The work was commissioned by Aberdeen Council, and the building work was carried out by CRC Construction.
