Hydraulic engineering is our specialty

Hydraulics is the study of water movement and levels and the forces exerted by them. Morphodynamics is the study of how water movement affects sediment transport and bed levels. From complex, 2D shallow water and 3D computational fluid dynamics analyses to simple GIS and spreadsheet models, most of our projects require a level of hydraulic understanding. Bespoke hydraulic modelling is a fundamental component of many of our projects, ranging in complexity from GIS models and spreadsheet calculations to state-of-the-art, fully 2D river and floodplain hydraulics and sediment transport computational models.

A leader in ecohydraulics

Hydraulic assessments are one of our key areas of specialism. We use our expertise in computational river modelling to inform the design of our environmental restoration projects, modelling flood response, fish passage, aquatic habitat, channel stability and sediment transport processes. We have also developed extensive expertise in modelling large wood structures in rivers.

We are at the forefront of fully 2D river and floodplain modelling to assess geomorphic processes, flood risk and natural flood management potential. We also specialise in combined hydraulic and sediment transport modelling to assess bank stability, erosion or scour and channel aggradation and have employed these analyses on perched channels, eroding meanders, scour or aggradation at bridges and the effects of barrier removal. To develop, calibrate and validate our models, we employ the latest surveying and monitoring technologies.

We choose the correct tools for each job because we know that one size does not fit all. We are adept at employing a wide range of hydraulic model software used in riverine, estuarine and coastal environments (e.g., SRH-2D, MIKE21, TUFLOW FV and Classic, HEC-RAS, Flood Modeller Pro, etc.).
